Johannes Grützke

Johannes Grützke, Self-Portrait with Female Pavian, 2001

Johannes Grützke, born 1937 in Berlin, studied at the "Hochschule für bildende Künste" in Berlin from 1957 to 1964. There, he was a pupil in a master class of Peter Janssen. In addition to that, from 1962 on, he studied with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg. In 1965, Grützke became a founding member of the "Erlebnisgeiger", and also set up Berlin's "Schule der neuen Prächtigkeit", together with the painters M. Bluth, M. Koeppel and Karl Heinz Ziegler. Grützke gave guest lectures at the "Hochschule für Bildende Künste" in Hamburg for one year in 1976, and designed several stage sets, with Peter Zadek as producer, at the "Deutsche Schauspielhaus" in Hamburg. As a painter and graphic designer Johannes Grützke has been creating works since the sixties, which impress by his irony, selection of motifs and brilliant technique.
